The Stanley Cup is headed back to Hockeytown U.S.A. because last night the Detroit Red Wings finished off the Pittsburgh Penguins in a battle that literally went down to the last millisecond. It wasn’t until the final buzzer sounded that Detroit knew they were the NHL champions because after hanging back all game Pittsburgh pressed hard the last two minutes, scoring one goal and almost tying the game up with under a second left. However, Detroit seemed destined to win as they played a gritty game and used all their experience to dominate the young Penguins for most of the series.
Detroit’s 11th championship team is a special one as it is the first NHL team to be captained by a European player. Nicklas Lidstrom of Sweden has won 3 other titles with Detroit but this was the first that he had captained a team to. Penguins captain Sydney Crosby looked broken hearted after his season came to an end Wednesday night but he should really feel relieved because now he can shave off that ridiculous little beard he was trying to grow. I respect the hell out of playoff beards but if you can’t grow facial hair then don’t try because you just look like an idiot.
It sounds mean, but I’m really happy that Sidney Crosby didn’t win a Stanley Cup this year. I actually hope that he never does. He’s a great player and seems like a nice kid but for some reason I just can’t stand him. He bugs me so much that even though I don’t like hockey I was rooting for Detroit to win the cup. Oh well, hockey is finally over and it’s time for a real championship to begin: the NBA championships.
A couple funny things I noticed about the game last night was that all the Pittsburgh fans were wearing white which backfired because the Red Wings away jerseys are white. I always laugh when that happens, wouldn’t it make more sense to wear your teams home colors? Another thing that made me laugh was after Detroit had won there was a woman standing right at the glass holding a sign that said “Happy Day.” Sure it was a happy day if you were a Detroit fan but if you’re going to make a sign you need to think of something way better to put on it than that.
The series ended up being way tighter than I thought it would be when it started, which is great for hockey fans but I’m glad it’s over. The hockey playoffs seem to go on forever and when you aren’t a hockey fan and it’s all you’re hearing about every time you turn on a sports station it gets to be really annoying. Oh well, Lakers and Celtics tip off tonight and I can’t wait!
