We give the Left 4 Dead demo a go, and here's what we thought ...
November 18th marks the day when Zombies once again make their way in to your households. Not through a blockbuster hit or a Capcom game but through Valve, the creators of Half-Life and Portal. Get ready for Left 4 Dead.
Today the demo became available on both Xbox 360 and PC either through the official site or the Xbox 360 Marketplace. The demo features 2 modes both following the story single player campaign. The first mode is "Campaign" where you and 3 other people (either through Steam or Xbox Live) gear up against the zombie horde. The other is "Single Player" which is basically exactly the same but with computers as apposed to real people.
You start off by watching the surprisingly lengthy opening video. If you haven't seen it yet it's been available online for some time now.
After either watching or skipping the video you're placed in a lobby (at least in Campaign mode) where you'll meet your team. You're prompted to select a character, 1 of 4, before someone else takes your preferred pick. There are only 4 unique characters in the game and once a player chooses one that character is no longer an option.
As far as the demo is concerned you're thrown right in to a level on a rooftop where you're facing a table of weapons and items. You'll quickly realize this is an opportunity to stock up and head out. Once inside a building you're able to see the outline of other players through the walls and objects. Though mixed reviews here at the office, I personally think it makes the essential "togetherness" of the game much easier to pull off.
You'll be faced with horde after horde of undead all the while watching your teammates backs and sometimes saving their lives. You immediately get the unique sensation of real teamwork the minute on of your buddies is being pulled away by some zombie like tentacle from the rooftop. There are more than enough opportunities for everyone to save a teammate at least once.
You're given a lot of weapon choice for a demo; Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle, Assault Rifle, Cocktails and more. Items consist of med packs and pain killers that can be used on yourself or another teammate.
The length of the demo feels short but is acceptable and all you'll need to get hooked. So far I'm loving the unique co-op style of this new Valve title and I'm sure the full game will get even better.
Left 4 Dead Demo receives a 9.5/10 Here's hoping the full version is just as good.
